Afghan pacer Shapoor Zadran passes away after battle with immune disorder

Veteran Afghanistan pacer Shapoor Zadran has died a day before his 39th birthday after battling a rare immune disorder called Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) syndrome for which he was being treated at a hospital here.

Zadran, a left-arm fast bowler, played 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is for Afghanistan between 2009 and 2020. HLH is a hyperinflammatory syndrome which compromises the immune system. He was brought to Delhi for treatment in January. His death on Tuesday was announced by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). zeppelin.cool

"With profound grief and deep sorrow, the Afghanistan Cricket Board mourns the passing of former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran," the ACB wrote on X.

The ACB said Zadran, an imposing bowler who was a part of some memorable wins and drew attention for his flowing hair, was "one of the foundation-laying figures of Afghanistan cricket".

"Shapoor Zadran was one of the foundation-laying figures of Afghanistan cricket, whose dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment played a vital role in the rise and development of the game in our country," the ACB said.

Several members of the Afghanistan team, including skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, Rashid Khan, and Mohammad Nabi had visited him in the hospital during the course of his treatment. Zadran was Afghanistan''s most successful bowler in the 2015 ODI World Cup, taking 10 wickets.

He recorded his career-best figures of 4/24 against the Netherlands on his ODI debut in August 2009, and claimed an overall 43 wickets in 44 matches for Afghanistan. In 36 T20Is, Zadran took 37 wickets with a career-best of 3/40 against Bangladesh in Dehradun in June 2018.

He also played 9 First-Class matches taking 17 wickets, and claimed an overall 57 wickets in 56 List A matches and another 90 scalps in 83 T20s. "He was among the proud cricketers who stood at the heart of Afghanistan''s early cricket journey and helped build the path that brought Afghan cricket to the international stage."

The ACB said Zadran was a source of inspiration for many young cricketers not just in Afghanistan but for others around the world.

"Throughout his career, Shapoor served Afghanistan cricket with honor, courage, and pride. His contributions and achievements will always remain an important part of the history of Afghanistan cricket, and his efforts in the service of the national team will never be forgotten," the ACB wrote.

"Beyond his achievements on the field, Shapoor Zadran was a true source of inspiration for many young Afghan cricketers and for cricket followers across the world."

"His fighting spirit, determination, and love for the game gave hope to many and encouraged a generation to dream bigger and believe in the future of Afghanistan cricket.

His loss is deeply felt, and his memory will forever remain alive in the hearts of the people of Afghanistan and the cricketing world," it added. With an aggressive approach, the 6''2" bowler brought a different flavour to the Afghanistan bowling attack and had famously said that he likes to be an angry state of mind while bowling to intimidate batsmen.

IND vs ENG: Atrocious Says Shreyas After India’s Biggest T20I Defeat

India captain Shreyas Iyer didn’t mince his words after his team’s horrendous 125-run defeat in the third T20I at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Iyer described his team’s performance as atrocious and said he could not have used a better word to express his emotions in the aftermath of the loss.

India were hammered by the hosts in what proved to be the series decider in Nottingham. After opting to bowl first, India could only restrict England to 201 in their 20 overs. With the bat, however, the Men in Blue faltered once again, being bowled out for just 76. It was India’s biggest defeat by runs in T20Is.

“I think it was atrocious,” Shreyas said during the post-match presentation ceremony. “I couldn’t use a better word, honestly. Losing by such a big margin is definitely not acceptable. First things first, I feel that we need to accept this loss and completely go back to the drawing board and see what we did wrong. Looking at the wicket, I don’t think it was a 200 wicket, to begin with. But other than that, the way we batted, we lost five wickets in the powerplay. I think that itself created the momentum, and I definitely feel that we lost the game there. So, we’ve got to go back to the drawing board.”

After another defeat on the UK tour, India can now, at best, level the five-match series by winning the remaining two T20Is. Four defeats and one no result make this India’s longest winless sequence in T20Is. Shreyas is yet to win a match as T20I captain, having begun his tenure on a disappointing note.

Samson has been given clarity on his omission: Gambhir

India head coach Gautam Gambhir asserted that Sanju Samson has been given complete clarity about his role after being dropped from the playing XI and did not rule out a comeback for the wicketkeeper-batter in the ongoing T20I series against England.

Samson has also been omitted from the squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe. Gambhir maintained that the senior player remains in India’s plans in the five-match series, which the visitors trail 0-2 after two losses and a washout.

“The clarity that should have been given to Sanju Samson, he has got from me,” Gambhir said after India’s 125-run defeat in the third T20I here on Tuesday.

“And that conversation is between a head coach and a player. The contents of that conversation are obviously not something I’ll share with you.

“…we are absolutely clear that what Sanju has done for India, especially during the World Cup, has been phenomenal. Sometimes, though, you also have to look at the form of a certain player. There is no hard and fast rule that he cannot make a comeback in this series.”

Samson, who was adjudged Player of the Tournament at this year’s T20 World Cup, was replaced in the playing XI by 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after scores of 5, 0 and 1 in his last three innings against Ireland and in the series-opener against England.

The 31-year-old was also left out of the squad for the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, with the selectors preferring Prabhsimran Singh following his impressive IPL campaign for Punjab Kings.

Gambhir said team selection would continue to be based on current form and the combination that gives India the best chance of winning.

“Ultimately, international cricket is about results. Whatever we feel is the best combination to get us those results, we will play that combination and that playing XI,” he said.

“I’ve always believed that everyone needs to earn their place. Everyone needs to earn the right to play for India,” he added.
