Nayar Wants India to Back Samson Only at the Top

Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar believes that if the team management decides to play Sanju Samson in the fourth T20I, which will be played in Bristol, he should bat at the top of the order.

Samson was dropped from the playing XI for the second T20I in Manchester after a hat-trick of low scores on the UK tour. To make matters worse for the 2026 T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament, he was left out of the squad for the Zimbabwe tour. The very next day, he once again missed out on selection.

India suffered their biggest defeat by runs in Nottingham after being bowled out for just 76.

If the team decides to bring Samson back, Nayar believes he should bat at the top of the order; otherwise, he should not play at all.

“I really feel that if you have to get Sanju Samson back in, you want to position him in a place where he can succeed,” Nayar said while speaking to the broadcasters. “Now, just because you want to bring him in, you’re going to bat him at No. 4, 5 or 6. It’s not something he’s done a lot. It’s not something he’s been successful at. He’s been best suited when he’s opened or batted in the top three. So if you aren’t giving him that position, then I feel it’s better that you don’t play Sanju Samson and instead stick with the kind of batting line-up India has.”

Samson has enjoyed a great deal of success at the top of the order in T20 cricket, particularly for India. The wicketkeeper-batter has struggled in the middle order, averaging below 25 when batting at No. 4 or No. 5 in T20Is.
